Happy Birthday, Justice Ginsburg!

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the oldest sitting Supreme Court Justice and all-around badass feminist icon, turns 82 today.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg is the second woman justice in U.S. history. Her positions on wage parity, same-sex marriage, and women's rights (When the Supreme Court decided to allow private businesses to refuse certain forms of birth control coverage to their employees, Justice Ginsburg wrote a scathing, 35-PAGE dissent.) have earned her the nickname "The Notorious R.B.G.," thanks to a Tumblr of the same name dedicated to her. In response to the question of whether she has considered stepping down, Justice Ginsburg has said: "As long as I can do the job full steam. I think I'll recognize when the time comes that I can't any longer. But now I can." In other words, this bossy gal has no intention of hanging up her robes. The verdict is in: Ya been Gins-burned!

Sam Smith and John Legend Record Duet Version of 'Lay Me Down'

I first heard Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” while watching a pairs figure skating program, which I naturally fell in love with immediately. Just when I thought the ballad and Sam Smith couldn’t be any more incredible, along comes John Legend for a duet that takes this song to an entirely new realm of beauty and poignancy.

The British singer-songwriter and legendary soul musician joined musical forces to rerecord Smith's In the Lonely Hour single. The duet serves as the official song for Red Nose Day 2015, a star-studded comedy event sponsored by the non-profit Comic Relief that raises money to help those affected by poverty across Africa and in the U.K..

"Red Nose Day is a UK-wide fundraising event organized by Comic Relief every two years. On Red Nose Day everyone is encouraged to cast inhibitions aside, put on a Red Nose and fundraise – celebrities included! It culminates in a night of cutting edge comedy and moving documentary films on BBC One. If this song were a lake I would swim in it all day and night then camp out by the bank to rest, only so I could jump in again to be completely engulfed by the melody, lyrics, and vocals. It’s that good.

I was working out at the gym the other night when Britney Spears’ ‘Work Bitch’ played on a Songza playlist. I always found the song to be catchy but as I generally don’t listen to song lyrics, all this time I never really paid attention to what it was she was saying. Upon closer inspection, I realized how insightful Britney really is. The Princess of Pop is not only a bossy gal, but she’s one bossy bitch.

International Women’s Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme is “Make It Happen,” a much-needed call to focus on women’s rights issues like equal pay, racial equality, and combating against sexual violence. Feminists and supporters around the world are speaking out today, calling for an end to the existing culture of misogyny, and mobilizing all people to do their part.

In her message for International Women's Day 2015, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka says gender parity must be reached before 2030. She calls on all countries to “step it up” for gender equality, to reach ‘Planet 50-50’ before 2030.

Stop "Should"-ing

How may times have we come across a product we felt we should have invented (hello, coffee sleeve), or read a book we were confident we could have written better (I'm looking at you Fifty Shades of Grey)? How many YouTube videos have we seen where someone is monetizing on something as silly as having uploaded a video of their fireplace, or read about a piece of art we could have painted selling for millions of dollars? I’ve come across numerous, successful business ideas where I found myself thinking, ‘I could do that.’ Except, I didn't.

Think you can do it? Then do it. Think you can do it better? Then do it better. The most important part being to do it. Eliminate the word "should" from your life. We spend so much of our lives talking about the things we want to do and places we want to go when we could be spending that time actually doing it. “I should put together a business plan,” "I should join a gym," “I should plan that trip to Europe,” “I should write more,” etc. You will always find numerous reasons why you can’t do something. Absent winning the lottery, there will always be something going on in your life, and even then, there are so many situations you can’t just throw money at to fix. So stop "should"-ing and just do it like a mother fucking boss.

I realize oftentimes the idea of something is a lot more appealing than the actual implementation of it. A lifelong dreamer, grandiose ideas have always taken a front seat to the boring details. No one wants to figure out the space-time continuum and all of that bending and warping — we just want to be able to teleport. Likewise, talking and dreaming about success is easier than working towards it. Sure, failure is also a big hindrance. The thing is, you’ll never know whether an idea will be successful or if your dream job is what you even want unless you bother trying.

Can't take off work and travel Europe for a month? Create a fund, and start saving your vacation days. Don't have the money to invest in your genius invention? Put together a business proposal to apply for a small business loan or get it funded on Kickstarter. Want to run a marathon? Start stretching. The only person stopping you from reaching and achieving your goals is you. You don't have to make drastic changes in your life in order for your dreams to materialize but sitting, wishing, and hoping isn't going to get you any closer to attaining what you want. You can’t win the lottery if you don’t at least buy a ticket.

BOSSY GALS was created from a desire to encourage and inspire, both others and myself.

I found that a number of the websites I frequented each catered to only a few of my numerous interests. They were either fashion and beauty blogs, health and fitness blogs, tech sites, or news websites. I strongly believe women are multi-faceted so I wanted to create one site where people could read about the latest fashion trends and celebrity news, as well as intelligent articles regarding world events and pressing social issues; where people could read updates on the entertainment industry, but also thoughtfully crafted pieces on love and life. I knew from the beginning I didn’t want to create a singular site that focused on one topic. 

I wanted to create a site I would want to frequent — where I could laugh at funny GIFs, find inspiration, learn something new while looking at large pictures, read relatable articles, and get the latest Hollywood scoop, all without being bombarded with advertisements, clicking tiny thumbnails and numerous slideshows, or being taken to multiple sites. Most importantly, I wanted to create an environment that fosters creativity and passion, a place that encourages independence and bossiness.

I have a number of ideas planned in my editorial calendar in the coming months and I’m working tirelessly to create a site that fulfills my aesthetic vision. This entire process has been an incredible experience for me and I’m excited to see how this site evolves and grows over the next year.

I’m proud to announce this is my 100th post, which is a remarkable accomplishment as I usually abandon projects as quickly as I start them. This is just the beginning, and I look forward to celebrating my future achievements and milestones with everyone. Thank you to all of my readers, and my family and friends for their endless love and support from day zero.

“On the internet people only look at pictures of kittens”

Famed political artist Banksy strikes again - this time in the Gaza strip. The artist posted pictures on his Instagram and official website of three murals he installed on various structures damaged in Israeli bombings and the Israeli-Hamas war of last summer. He also posted a video on his YouTube channel which appears to show him sneaking into Gaza through an underground tunnel from Egypt, which his publicist confirmed according to AP News.

On his site Banksy wrote: “A local man came up and said 'Please - what does this mean?' I explained I wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting photos on my website – but on the internet people only look at pictures of kittens.” He comments on the difficulties the almost exclusively Palestinian residents must deal with, describing Gaza as the “world’s largest open air prison”, and the video ends on this note - “If we wash our hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless we side with the powerful - we don't remain neutral.”

Regardless of where you stand politically, maybe take a couple minutes today to catch up on world news. The montage of cute kittens playing can wait. Vox provides a great breakdown of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for those who want to learn more.

Challenge: Rock Climbing

If you haven’t experienced the exhilarating thrill of clinging to a cliff face hundreds of feet off the ground with nothing but some metal clips, a length of rope, a harness, and chalky hands to keep you from falling then you have not lived. Nothing compares to the combination of terror and triumph as you climb your way to the top and look down on the height you’ve scaled. [Cue distant cry of a lone hawk and wind rustling in the tree tops] 

But seriously, dramatic intro aside, I firmly believe everybody should try rock climbing at least once in their life. 

WHY: Need a list of reasons? 

1. You’ll have fun while working out your entire body (read: no need to hit multiple machines!). A common misconception is that rock climbing is all about upper body strength, but with proper climbing technique you will work your arms, back, butt, core, and legs!

2. You will meet the coolest people. Seriously. From adrenaline junkies, to hippies with wanderlust, to that-quiet-guy-who-works-in-a-cubicle-all-day-but-omg-beasts-his-way-up-the-hardest-route-shirtless, you’ll get to make friends with folks from all walks of life.

3. It’s different - I don’t know about you but I hate staring at my red face in the mirror as I do just-one-more-rep of dumbbell curls or just-one-more-lap on the treadmill or just-one-more-sit-up. Add some variety to your workout. According to the Journal of Obesity, performing a variety of different types of activities helps with maintaining high levels of physical activity. 

4. It’s easy to see improvement - Let’s face it, most of us don’t want to continue any exercises that don’t yield results. With rock climbing, it’s easy to track your progress as you climb increasingly challenging routes, and nothing beats the sense of accomplishment when you finally "send" (that’s climber code for making it to the top of a route without falling) a route you’ve been working on for weeks.

5. It works your brain, too. No, not like those Lumosity commercials. Routes are like puzzles, as you try to figure out the best way to make your way up to the top - where should I put my hand? Should I reach out here to my left or take a high step up here on the right? Climbing forces you to actually do some thinking (not something you usually do in a gym, huh?).

6. One of my friends calls rock-climbing harnesses “butt bras”. Exactly what it sounds like.   

WHO: Anybody can rock climb! I’ve seen all ages, races, shapes and sizes. Never assume you can assess someone’s climbing ability by their appearance (remember quiet-cubicle-guy from Reason #3?).

WHERE: You don’t have to go outside to rock climb. There are indoor rock climbing gyms all over the country, and some bigger gyms also have their own rock wall areas. A quick Google search should yield some local results, and I also suggest checking with nearby universities which often have college climbing clubs. A good gym will have short clinics or lessons where you can get a basic rundown on safety and proper technique. 

If you do want to climb outside (yay!), check online climbing forums like Mountain Project for information and advice on the best areas, routes, etc. and make sure to go with an experienced buddy or guide! 

QUICK TIPS: Keep these in mind as you go in for your first climb!

• Wear clothes you can move in but try to avoid pants that are too baggy as they can bunch uncomfortably under your harness. You can’t go wrong with stretchy, slim-fitting pants or leggings.
• Climbing shoes are supposed to be tight. They are supposed to be worn with no socks, but if you want to keep yours on with your rental pair I don’t blame you.
• The chalk is to keep your hands from slipping when you’re halfway up the wall and your palms are extra sweaty because you’re nervous or tired.
• Climb like you’re going up a ladder. Yes, you need to use your arms, but you really need to make sure you get your feet up.
• Climbing is inherently dangerous so be sure to listen to the instructors and pay attention!
• Have fun!

Dear Internet: Can You Please Let Me Be Curious?

Sometimes the Internet feels like that friend who spoils the ending of all of the movies you've been wanting to see or tells you the big plot twists in the TV shows you’ve been meaning to watch. Sure, some writers are kind enough to throw in giant “[SPOILER ALERT]” disclaimers for you, but the Internet, that inconsiderate bitch, often just wants to be the first to tell you and will somehow manage to sneak in unsolicited information when you’re least expecting it. Like, oh, here’s a perfectly normal article on healthy cooking tips — wait, the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones, what?!

Today, for example, I’ve been spending most of my day on the Internet trying not to find out what happened on the series finale of Parks and Recreation last night. I do not (bold, highlight, underline, emphasis added) want to know. I’m still a good three seasons away from watching the series finale. I’m still in that phase of growing and connecting with the characters on the show, and I’m not ashamed to admit I’m having a marvelous time developing relationships with each and every one of these fictional people. I’m not ready to find out what happens to this delightful bunch in the wonderful town of Pawnee that has brought me so much joy. I’m not ready to say goodbye.

Trying not to find out certain information on the Internet has proven to be extremely challenging considering I am constantly researching (on the Internet) to find ideas and news for my blog (which is on the Internet), and I use social media (also on the Internet) to reach out to current and potential readers (who are on the Internet!). See my dilemma? It’s like that episode of How I Met Your Mother where everyone agrees not to watch the Super Bowl game so they can all watch it together the next day, and they have to get through an entire day without finding out which team won. Except this is every single day of my life for TV shows I haven’t seen, books I haven’t read, movies I haven’t gotten around to seeing, and just simple everyday questions I may have that I enjoy pondering.

The Internet is great when you want to find out information, but it’s not the best when you’re trying to figure things out on your own; when you want to experience it by yourself without already knowing how it’s going to end. There is a beauty in being curious. So, Internet, do you think you could pump the brakes a little, try not to constantly shove unsolicited information down my throat, try not to steal the mystery out of everything, and let me be curious? Thanks.

You Won't Always Receive An Answer

I’ve found that one of the greatest lessons you learn from the numerous break ups you experience throughout your life — whether it be with significant others, friends, or other relationships you invested in — is accepting that you won’t always get an answer as to why the relationship ended. Similarly, you’ll come across numerous situations and people in your life where you won’t get the clarity you desire despite how adamantly you may demand it. Whether it’s being pointedly left out of a get together, encountering someone who seems to hate you before getting to know you, or being turned down for a promotion you were confident was yours, you won't always receive an answer as to why things didn't turn out the way you figured.

As someone who demands clarity, comprehension, and coherence — who insists upon it — this has been a lifelong struggle for me. I have an unrelenting need to understand, more so than the average person. Why? What do you mean? Make me understand. I must understand. I have a hard time grasping and accepting a situation until I can fully comprehend it in its entirety. I need all of the facts before I can find a solution. Except life doesn't always give you solvable equations, and sometimes you'll have all of the pieces but the puzzle still won't fit. You won't always understand the situations life throws your way, hard as you may try.

As the great, late Joan Rivers said, "It doesn't get better — you get better." You get better at accepting that people won’t always spell things out for you because sometimes it’s as simple as them no longer caring to. You get better at learning that situations and people will often leave you feeling bewildered, befuddled, and betrayed; that life can be grossly unfair. But you also experience that despite the torrential downpours, you get better at navigating the waters and charting your own course. You get better at distancing yourself from the past and learn to look forward — to focus on yourself and surround yourself with people who respect and care for you enough to help you better understand the beautiful mess of a world we live in. And when that happens, the answers won't matter so much.

How Apple’s Racially Diverse Emojis Are Diversely Racist

Apple delivered the new beta versions of their operating system updates to developers yesterday. Word quickly spread that the updates (OS X 10.10.3 and iOS 8.3) will include the long-awaited, racially diverse emojis—you’ll be able to tap and hold an emoji to see a selection of several skin tones to choose from. Because now even cartoon pictures depicting emotions—that originated from combining a colon and a parenthesis to make a happy face—have to be politically correct. 

The most glaring issue of these racially diverse emojis is, you guessed it, the stereotypical Asian face—a yellow face to classify Asians—because Asians are all Lego people. Using “yellow” to describe Asians is as outdated as labeling us “oriental” and as offensive as calling us “chinks.” Furthermore, this may come as a shock to the designers at Apple but Asians have varying colors of skin tones, just as African Americans and Caucasians do. Apple wouldn’t have fathomed using a dark black color to attribute to all African-Americans but they somehow figured using a bright, jaundice yellow to classify all Asian ethnicities was appropriate. Why even bother giving the illusion of racial sensitivity and promoting diversity when the subsequent emoji is going to be a yellow Chinaman?

An additional problem with providing the exact same emoji in six different colors is that it further focuses on the color of a person's skin in a society where racial equality is still a struggle that affects minorities on a daily basis, as highlighted by the Ferguson protests. While it may have been well intentioned, compounding numerous ethnicities and cultures and reducing them to six colors promulgates the misconception that everyone can be reduced to one skin color and promotes racism.

In response to the criticism of the yellow emoji, an Apple analyst, Rene Ritchie, tweeted:

He further explained that Apple is using a Unicode system and the absence of a specified skin-tone defaults in “a non-human color.”

So you're telling me Apple didn't intentionally choose a yellow emoji to represent an Asian skin tone, but instead, despite Apple declaring China to be one of its most important markets and Asians dominating Silicon Valley tech jobs, it simply failed to include an emoji for Asians, and the closest option we have to choose is a “non-human color”? I don’t know which is worse.

Strangers Unite To Save An Autistic Boy's Birthday

Glenn Buratti, a 6-year-old from Osceola County, Florida has epilepsy and a mild form of autism. Glen's mom, Ashlee, threw him a birthday party earlier this month but unfortunately, the 16 kids he invited from his class have soulless parents that didn't bother to RSVP, and no one showed up. Heartbroken over her son who was counting down the minutes till he saw his friends from the moment he woke up, she posted a message on a local Facebook group that read, “I know this might be something silly to rant about, but my heart is breaking for my son. We invited his whole class (16 kids) over for his 6th birthday party today. Not one kid came.” The incredible response from the community will restore your faith in humanity. [BuzzFeed]

The best part about being Asian and celebrating the Lunar New Year (besides the envelopes of cash), is that you get a second New Year’s Day to press reset and start all over in case the first month and a half of the year didn't quite take off the way you expected. 5-Year Old Girl Discusses Princess Leia's Slave Outfit

This animated video, by The Brothers McLeod, is a real conversation between a father, comedian and actor Adam Buxton, and his 5-year old daughter discussing Princess Leia's iconic slave outfit in Return of the Jedi. Despite the criticism the slave Leia costume received for being sexist and demeaning, this little girl doesn't care what people think and states, “It’s actually a pretty good look for her.” I have to agree. It’s actually quite nice.

Kickboxing at TITLE Boxing Club

My sister Kyu (pronounced Q) and I took a free kickboxing class at TITLE Boxing Club in Springfield, Virginia last Saturday. I love fitness studios that offer a free or discounted first class as it gives me an opportunity to check out a real class and an instructor before making any sort of commitment.

I’ve taken a number of kickboxing classes at the former LA Boxing (now UFC Gym) in Alexandria, Virginia so I generally knew what to expect. Some gyms have a very distinct, wet rag smell but the gym was clean with updated equipment. My only gripe was that there weren’t any mats to lie on when doing floor exercises. I know mats aren’t necessarily clean as they can breed bacteria if they aren’t properly wiped down, but I prefer them to lying on the ground people have been stepping all over.

Kyu had never taken a kickboxing class before so she bought wraps, and the front desk coordinator helped her properly wrap her hands. I had forgotten my gloves but they let us borrow gloves free of charge. The class started with fifteen minutes of sprinting and jogging around the gym, alternating between shuffling and high knees. Afterwards, we spent thirty minutes punching and kicking our individual bags with combinations called out by our instructor, Kevin. The last fifteen minutes were spent doing floor exercises, including burpees, push ups, and variations of sit ups with a medicine ball.

I’ve always enjoyed kickboxing classes because they’re a great break from traditional gym workouts. They’re even more fun when taken with a friend because you can share looks (and shrieks) of pain and misery, and laugh together as you take a mini-break when the instructor’s back is turned. The class definitely kicked our ass and we were both sore for an entire week.

Unfortunately, TITLE Boxing doesn’t offer drop in classes, only monthly gym memberships ranging from $60-$80 like traditional gyms. I find drop in classes are a great way to build brand loyalty and makes economic sense for the business, as most people end up not using all of their classes anyways. While TITLE Boxing had a number of promotions going on, the reality is that unless I’m offered an incredible monthly rate, I probably won’t be going back. This is such a shame as Kyu and I really enjoyed the class and would have loved the opportunity to check out the other classes and instructors.
