Stop Running From Your Life

December 22, 2015 by Young K. in Life

Harder, better, faster, stronger. Quicker, further, swifter, longer.

We’re programmed as a society to constantly be in the pursuit of something, to propel our lives into motion. Move, move, move. Let’s go, go, go. Consequently, whether we’re chasing our future or running from our past, we're continuously running towards something or away from it. We neglect what we truly want to do with our lives because we’re consumed with success and running towards what we should be doing. Concurrently, we dwell on unsuccessful relationships and our personal failures longer than we should, losing time as we attempt to flee from our inner demons and what we could have done. And while we’re desperately running on this hamster wheel, furiously fluctuating between opposite directions, we find we’ve lost touch with the things that matter the most — our friends, our family, our dreams, our passions. Days turn to months, months to years, and suddenly we’ve lost so much of our lives having failed to actually live it, having been thrown around like a rag doll, forcibly swept into the rip currents of societal standards and our own often impossible personal expectations.

I'm regrettably quite familiar with the ease of getting lost in the crowd and frenzy of life. I'm also uncomfortably acquainted with the impassivity of taking part in the rat race — filling your life with the trivial pursuit of material fulfillments and chasing down temporary highs. I've often likened myself to a shark, in that I felt if I wasn't constantly moving — that if I simply stopped swimming — I would suffocate and die. What I've learned, if anything, is that the hardest part isn't keeping up with the momentum of others — it's standing still and shutting out the noise, stepping out of stride and separating yourself from the masses.

Stop running and take a moment to take in the splendor of the world surrounding you. Life is happening all around you. It is chaotic but as stifling and all-consuming as it may feel at times, it is unequivocally beautiful and breathtaking.

Be a part of it.

Be present.

Live in the now and make each and every moment count because tomorrow is not guaranteed. Right here, right now is the only moment that matters.

I’ve lost months and years of my life because I was so busy running and failed to truly appreciate what was actually happening in my life. Living in a series of whirlwinds, I've often failed to see the beauty in people and moments. The most meaningful moments of my life were when I chose to be present and chose to be a part of the world I live in, not just the one I created for myself. The magnificence of the world around me sprang to life and colors became more vivid and vibrant when I took the time to observe rather than see, and people's stories and their individual spirits became louder and increasingly significant when I chose to listen to meaning than just hear words.

This is your life. This very moment you are breathing and feeling is what matters so stop running, stop simply existing, and start living. Go on an adventure. Talk to a stranger. Spend a day walking through your city and get lost. Fall in love. Because it’s only when you stop running and stop letting life pass you by in a blur that you’re able to revel in the stillness and see the maddening beauty of the world around you.

What I Learned From 1 Week On Imgur

June 11, 2015 by Young K.

I’ve never really been much of a virtual community type of person, except a sizable amount of my early teenage years spent hanging out in AOL chat rooms. I used to spend a lot of time on BuzzFeed until I realized it was making me stupider. I found Reddit to be interesting and funny but the organization of the site always gave me a headache. I decided to check out Imgur because it’s easy to navigate, it’s direct and to the point, and, seriously, who doesn’t enjoy laughing at funny pictures? Memes rule. GIFs are even better. Uplifting stories? The best. Here’s what I learned after a week and countless hours (and counting...) on Imgur.

1.    People are seriously fucking clever.

Have you ever been in a situation in life where you felt you said or thought something rather witty or clever? Where you felt such an incredible sensation of smugness and cleverness come over you, you wanted to pat yourself on the back or write it down so you could always remember that one clever thing you said? Well, forget it. Because the top posters and commenters on Imgur are Super Saiyan 4 clever. Not Loki or The Joker clever (sorry guys), but know-how-to-twist-words-and-craft-the-single-most-hilarious-sentence, pun masters clever. Which leads me to...

2.    People are seriously funny.

Have you ever met someone and instantly bonded over your similar sense of humor? Now imagine a whole community of people who have the exact same sense of humor as you. You know that one hilarious friend you have? Times them by 1,000. Then a million. I’m thinking of starting a YouTube channel where people just record themselves looking through images and reading through comments on Imgur because it would really just be a beautiful collection of people lol-ing, guffawing, and hysterically laughing.

3.    GIF Wars are real.

Step aside because the best of the best are coming up against one another on Imgur. Pop a few pounds of popcorn because you don’t want to miss these genius posters creating clever, I-wish-I-had-thought-of-that GIFs in a battle of wits and seriously fantastic movie references. How?! How?!

And then there’s one user, @PettyOfficer117, the originator of the most recent GIF Wars, who posted a tutorial on how easy it is to create GIFs, basically encouraging everyone to become involved and strive towards creativity, and you’re like, ‘You must be a hero in real life, @PettyOfficer117.’

4.    Be yourself.

Based on my observations, there’s nothing Imgurians hate more than liars or people who post images simply for upvotes. Sure, getting to the Front Page is the ultimate objective (artificial points matter!), but there is nothing more heinous, egregious, and vile on Imgur than frauds. You simply do not get to insist you are white, then black, then Republican, then a victim, then a survivor for upvotes. You will get called out on it. You will be publicly shamed. You will have to delete your account and start over, and even then, people may figure out your new username.

5. Always post original content.

OC trumps reposted garbage. The Imgur community insists on originality. Don’t bother reposting cool or funny pictures you saw on Reddit because the people here are ninjas. They know (see above). ‘Be original. Be creative. Show me something new and unseen,’ they demand, which I find admirable. Imgur is the birthplace of the majority of the funny pictures you see on Instagram accounts such as @thefatjewish, @9gag, and @beigecardigan. When you see the same pictures on these accounts hours or days after you saw them on Imgur, it makes you understand why original content is so important and greatly advocated.

6. Shitty people need not apply.

Anyone who has spent any time on the comments section of any page or article anticipates reading incredibly hateful, ignorant, and offensive comments. Surprisingly, you won't find these on Imgur and if you do, the community will swiftly downvote the comment or shame the person into deleting their account. Imgur is more than a website where people post pictures. It's a community of people who will not condone hatred or bigotry. That's not to say this is a place of rainbows and butterflies, as there are plenty of people who slip in between the cracks. In addition, there are plenty of I-can't-believe-you-said-that, and we're-all-going-hell jokes, but you won't find anyone spewing depravity or hatred here, and considering that kind of negativity is rampant all over the Internet, that's an amazing, collective achievement.

No website has made me want to become involved and connected with the people who comprise this virtual community of people as Imgur has. This is a network of people who promote originality and those who, despite how shitty everyone else in the world can be, come together to cheer on, congratulate, sympathize with, and encourage human connections. So to those who comprise this insanely creative, inspiringly wonderful community on Imgur, I upvote you.

I Kissed A Murderer

May 22, 2015 by Young K.

This time last year I learned a high school crush of mine murdered his neighbor by partially scalping and stabbing him with a samurai sword.

The summer of 2002, still riding on the high of Korea having advanced to the semifinals in the World Cup, an unusual group of high schoolers drifted together for a single, carefree summer. There were seven of us; three boys, four girls. We would, in typical teenager fashion, go for long drives, sometimes successfully convince older friends to buy us alcohol, and sit around smoking cigarettes in our cars while listening to the radio, talking about our futures and the meaning of life. We would often attend house parties with other teenagers sprawled throughout rooms, trance music playing on a CD player, strobe lights flickering against the walls, and one by one everyone would fall asleep on the couches and floor.

I remember lying on the carpeted basement next to one of the guys from this new circle of friends. He was older and went to a different high school, but we had mutual friends and ran in similar circles. I found myself drawn to this smart, well-spoken, and passionate guy. Looking back, I can’t recall a single conversation we had together. I can’t recollect a single topic we discussed. But I remember the delirious thrill of how his lips felt pressed against mine as we laid there in the dark. Then, as all good things do, summer came to an end, and we all went back to our respective high schools and lives. While we maintained individual friendships, all seven of us never hung out together again. Throughout the years empty promises were made to catch up — how we would contact each other to set up a reunion — but it never happened.

Eleven years later, I sat in utter shock as my eyes raced across the news articles and the criminal complaint, reeling from the words I was reading on the screen, struggling to comprehend the chain of events. He had attacked, partially scalped, and subsequently killed a man, claiming to be God and telling the police the universe wanted him to kill the victim. And yet, despite that erratic and ultra-violent behavior, he chose to represent himself in court and coherently argued how psychiatric treatment and being required to take medication infringed upon his rights. Four months later, the judge noted his intelligence and his capacity to articulate legal concepts, but also that his delusional belief system made him incompetent to stand trial, and suspended the case, committing him to the Department of Health Services.

How could this have happened? How had this seemingly "normal," intelligent person ended up in this situation? And even more, how lonely that journey must have been for him. Throughout the years I had intermittently heard stories of mental illness, “something being wrong,” speculation of time spent in a mental facility, diagnoses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and failed medications. But try as I could, I couldn’t comprehend how it had escalated to this. How had this young, Korean-American boy, who had grown up in a small, tight knit Christian community in one of the richest counties in America, with a brotherhood of close friends, end up alone and mentally deranged in Wisconsin of all places? How had so many signs been missed, and worse, ignored? Similar questions were asked about Seung-Hui Cho, another Korean-American who grew up in the same area, who would later be responsible for the Virginia Tech massacre.

The worst part is knowing this situation could have been avoided. Lives could have been saved — both the victim’s and his. There needs to be a discussion of the stigma attached to mental illness, as well as the glaring flaws in our mental health care system. We are a country comprised of big pharmaceutical companies who profit off of treating the ill, not curing them, and we as a society spend more time trying to ignore mental illness than trying to understand it. We need to address the obvious failings in the way we treat the mentally ill in our country, as well as focus our attention on the way our prison systems deal with the mentally ill.

According to a report published last year, U.S. prisons are home to ten times more mentally ill Americans than state psychiatric hospitals — individuals’ conditions often deteriorating while they are incarcerated. TEN TIMES. The report, ‘The Treatment of Persons With Mental Illness In Prisons and Jails,’ “calls for reform of laws and practices focused on the treatment of mental illness… encouraging cost studies to compare the true cost of housing individuals in prisons or jails as opposed to treating them in the community.” Furthermore, according to a 2011 article titled ‘Nation’s Jails Struggle With Mentally Ill Prisoners' by NPR, 350,000 is the conservative estimate for the number of offenders with mental illness confined in America’s prisons and jails. More Americans receive mental health treatment in prisons and jails than in hospitals or treatment centers, the three largest inpatient psychiatric facilities in the country being jails: Los Angeles County Jail, Rikers Island Jail in New York City, and Cook County Jail in Illinois. The economic cost of untreated mental illness is more than $100 billion each year in the U.S., according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

It’s difficult for some people to understand why I feel a need to rise up and champion a cause to attempt to help this stranger I haven’t seen in over a decade. Perhaps it’s because I love a good cause, or because I realize that he is not a deranged killer but instead a sick man whose own country failed him as we have countless others. Or because I know he will get lost in another flawed system, being numbed and shuffled around from institution to institution. Maybe it's because of a desire to improve the lives of the tens of millions of Americans affected by mental illness. Possibly because it’s hard to ignore the egregious human rights violations that are occurring within our own borders. Or maybe it's because I realize that this guy could have been, well, any of us.

A quarter of Americans experience some form of mental disorder or substance abuse problem at some point in their lives, states the American Psychiatric Association. Untreated, mental illness can lead to unemployment or homelessness, and patients often turn to substance abuse or suicide. As stated above, many are taken to prison instead of receiving necessary care. It’s sadly common knowledge that the U.S. puts more citizens behind bars than any other country in the world. We’ve turned into a nation that addresses its social ills by locking its citizens behind bars, often for life.

There is incredible importance in addressing mental health symptoms early. Mental health conditions can be detected early on, and should be treated long before they reach the most critical points in the disease process. We cannot keep waiting to respond only when these often treatable illnesses have escalated to their most critical, potentially life-threatening stages. Often, friends are the first to notice symptoms of someone in the early stages of a mental illness. Early warning signs can lead to intervention that can help reduce the severity of an illness, and it may even be possible to delay or prevent a major mental illness altogether.

Furthermore, there is an overwhelming need for increased public dialogue and subsequent action on a national scale to de-stigmatize mental illness, where we can enable people to accept that mental illness is something that they can relate to and have more than likely experienced or witnessed.  The goal is to influence public policy by changing the way Americans view mental health. Perhaps if we all come together and work together to fuel a national conversation, we can truly make progress in changing our view and approach towards mental illness.

The only memento I have of that long-lost summer is a jewelry box everyone pitched in to get me for my 16th birthday, engraved Summer 2002. It still sits on my vanity. I just wish I had a picture of all of us. When I close my eyes I'm able to vividly imagine one — the seven of us lazily smiling with youthful exuberance into the camera, optimistically envisioning our limitless futures ahead of us.

[May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you think you or someone you know may have a mental or emotional problem, it is important to remember there is hope and help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness — taking action to help yourself is a sign of strength.  If you or someone you know is in crisis now, seek help immediately. Call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to reach a 24 hour crisis center or dial 911 for immediate assistance.]

Take The Compliment

May 21, 2015 by Young K.

Society peculiarly frowns upon loving yourself too much, being unduly confident, and being your own PR agent (e.g. Kanye). Be confident, but not too confident; be proud of what you do, but don’t be prideful; praise others, but be sure not to praise yourself. What exactly is the problem we have with acknowledging one’s awesomeness? Why are we not allowed to love ourselves entirely, root for our success, and praise our accomplishments? I work tirelessly to be who I am and be where I am in my life — most often a result of my own perseverance, grit, and tenacity — why am I not allowed to laud my achievements?

Furthermore, on top of moderating our greatness so as to avoid titles such as being "conceited," a "diva," or simply "full of it," women always feel the need to deflect or downplay compliments. It’s almost as if we’re programmed not to be too accepting of compliments — automated by society to have an appropriate response as to why our hair looks great, our clothes are pretty, and why we look thinner. What is this unspoken rule that we’re never allowed to answer, “Oh, this dress? It’s pretty, right? It was stupidly expensive but I busted my ass working at a job I hate to afford it,” or “This hair? I spent $300 on a haircut and dye job on an appointment I had to make 3 months in advance,” or “I look thinner? I pay a $100 monthly membership at a gym where I work out really, really hard 5-6 times a week”?

A few years back, I had to teach myself how to accept compliments. For so long, my knee-jerk reaction was to deny or refute compliments. Not because I didn't agree with what the other person was saying — I've always known I'm a total bitchin' rock star from Mars — but because it felt like the "appropriate" way to respond. Yet, I've learned that like so many aspects of my life, accepting compliments is a muscle you have to use and strengthen. Don’t immediately deflect or rationale kind words, affirmations, and compliments. Embrace and applaud your capabilities and how unbelievably fabulous you are, and allow others to do the same. No one is going to root for you, support you, and look out for you like you, so don’t hold back when it comes to loving and celebrating yourself.

MisterWives' Cover Of 'Riptide' Is Everything (And More)

April 26, 2015 by Young K.

I’ve loved Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ since Day 0 and recently discovered MisterWives after falling in love with their song ‘Our Own House’ which I featured in my second Mixtape. They're like the American version of CHVRCHΞS. I was completely floored when I heard MisterWives’ cover of ‘Riptide’ from their Spotify Session and I’m beyond ecstatic both Vance Joy and MisterWives will be performing at Sweetlife on May 30-31. There is something incredibly haunting and beautiful about Mandy Lee's voice. I will burst into a million pieces of confetti and tears if MisterWives performs this cover live.

Angelina Jolie To UN: "We Are Failing to Save Lives"

April 25, 2015 by Young K.

Angelina Jolie pleaded with world powers on Friday to help the millions of Syrian refugees, sharply criticizing the U.N. Security Council for being paralyzed by its division over Syria's four-year conflict.

Jolie briefed the council as special envoy for the UN on refugee issues. Jolie, who said she has made 11 visits to Syrian refugees in the region since the crisis began in 2011, called strongly for the political will to act.

The U.N. estimates that about 3.8 million people have fled Syria and 7.6 million others have been displaced in the last four years. Some 220,000 Syrians have been killed since 2011, when peaceful protests erupted against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but gradually developed into a complex and bloody civil war.

"The problem is not lack of information. We know in excruciating detail what is happening in Aleppo, in Homs," Jolie said. "The problem is lack of political will. We cannot look at Syria and the evil that has risen from the ashes of indecision and think this is not the lowest point in the world's inability to protect and defend the innocent."

“Not enough people realize all that the United Nations does around the world,” Jolie said. "But all of this good is being undermined by the message being sent in Syria -- that laws can be flouted, chemical weapons can be used, hospitals can be bombed, aid can be withheld, and civilians starved, with impunity."

"We are standing by in Syria," she said, adding that the council's powers lie unused because its members cannot agree on how to address the conflict.

Jolie pleaded with the council to “work as one and end the conflict” by first imposing sanctions and an arms embargo on Syria. Russia, a top Syria ally and backed by China, has vetoed multiple council resolutions on Syria, including an effort last year to refer the situation there to the International Criminal Court. She said she would like to see the foreign minister of each of the 15 council members come to the table to negotiate a political solution.

In addition, Jolie spoke about the rising migrant crisis on the Mediterranean. Over the past three weeks more than 1,300 migrants fleeing Syria and other places have drowned at sea due to overcrowded boats that sink.

"It is sickening to see thousands of refugees drowning on the doorstep of the world's wealthiest continent," she said. "No one risks the lives of their children in this way except out of utter desperation."

Here are a few ways you can help Syrian refugees and make a difference.

If Your City Were Syria

April 23, 2015 by Young K.

What if your city was plunged into a conflict similar to that in Syria?

Save the Children released a time-lapse video last year, titled 'If London Were Syria', as part of their efforts to raise awareness about the plight of Syrian children and it is equally if not more powerful and harrowing a year later.

The video imagines the nightmare a British child would endure if war came to London and one can imagine that young girl living in any metropolitan city unaffected by civil war.

The video, created by a British creative agency Don't Panic, starts with a happy young girl blowing out candles on a birthday cake, playing dress-up, and asleep peacefully in a car. Slowly the images turn darker, and scene shows disruption, chaos, bombing, and panic as London gets gripped into a Syria-type conflict.

"Our solution was to tell a story that would bring the realities of Syria home, and to do it we combined the one-second-a-day and photo time-lapse formats to create a new way of showing an ordinary girl’s world falling apart in just a year," Don't Panic stated.

It closes with the words: "Just because it isn't happening here, doesn't mean it isn't happening."

"We hope the video will resonate with members of the public, particularly those who don’t know much about the situation in Syria so they can really understand the plight of innocent Syrian children," said Jake Lundi, Director of Brand and Communications at Save The Children. "The message to the public is just because it’s not happening here, doesn’t mean it’s not happening."

The UN has called Syria’s four-year civil war the “world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe,” with an estimated 220,000 killed and more than 12 million in need of aid. About 5.6 million of those are children.

More than 3.8 million Syrians have fled to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt, according to the UNHCR, while another 7.6 million Syrians are displaced inside the country. At least 1.8 million Iraqis were also displaced last year by violence triggered by the Sunni militant onslaught.

You can support Save the Children’s ‘Syria Children in Crisis’ fund by donating online or by calling 1-800-728-3843.

How Can I Help Syrian Refugees?

April 23, 2015 by Young K.

The UN has called Syria’s four-year civil war the “world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe,” with an estimated 220,000 killed and more than 12 million in need of aid. About 5.6 million of those are children.

The following is a list of organizations, courtesy of CNN, that are offering supplies, shelter and medical care for the people displaced by the crisis in Syria.

  • Doctors Without Borders is providing direct medical aid in six hospitals and four health centers inside Syria. They are also sending medical supplies, equipment and support to the medical networks throughout Syria that they cannot access themselves. They accept donations online, and you can earmark your gift for Syria by calling 1-888-392-0392.

  • World Vision is helping in Lebanon with projects to give refugees access to clean water and sanitation. They are also in Jordan, providing basic emergency supplies, water, sanitation, and education for refugees. In Syria, they are delivering water and health services. You can support them with an online donation or by calling 1-800-562-4453.

  • CARE is operating four refugee centers in Jordan, and is helping refugees there with cash assistance for rent and food. In Lebanon they are helping refugees get access to clean water. They are also working inside Syria, providing emergency supplies for families, psychosocial support for children and emergency medical equipment and support for women. You can support their efforts with an online donation or by donating by phone at 1-800-521-CARE.

  • Catholic Relief Services is providing aid throughout the region. This includes urgent medical assistance, education and trauma counseling for children, and household supplies including soap and water purifiers. You can donate online where you can specify "Syria relief" in the special request form. You can also donate by phone at 1-877-435-7277.

  • Concern Worldwide is working to meet the water, sanitation and hygiene needs for refugees in Lebanon and for many still in Syria. You can donate online or call them at 1-800-59-CONCERN.

Angelina Jolie: Iraq, Syria Worse Than Ever Before

April 23, 2015 by Young K.

Back in January, Angelina Jolie traveled to Khanke, Iraq on an envoy with the United Nations Refugee Agency, and documented the horrific living conditions families and survivors are living under. Following her visit to an Iraqi refugee camp, she wrote an impassioned op-ed in the New York Times describing the devastation she witnessed and called for action to help the millions of displaced Syrians and Iraqis who no longer have a home. She urged world leaders to scale up relief efforts and do more to broker a ceasefire agreement in Syria.

“For many years I have visited camps, and every time, I sit in a tent and hear stories,” wrote the 39-year-old mother of six. “I try my best to give support. To say something that will show solidarity and give some kind of thoughtful guidance. On this trip I was speechless.”

The UN has called Syria’s four-year civil war the “world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe,” with an estimated 220,000 killed and more than 12 million in need of aid. About 5.6 million of those are children.

Jolie went on to recount individual stories of abuse that she said exceeded the brutality of accounts she had heard on four previous visits to Iraq as the special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She described conversations with refugees who’ve been gravely affected by the instability brought on by ISIS.

“What do you say to the 13-year-old girl who describes the warehouses where she and the others lived and would be pulled out, three at a time, to be raped by the men?” Jolie asked. “How can you speak when a woman your own age looks you in the eye and tells you that her whole family was killed in front of her, and that she now lives alone in a tent and has minimal food rations?”

The “Unbroken” director warned that without an end to the war in Syria, the “spread of extremism, the surge in foreign fighters, the threat of new terrorism” will continue.

Jolie demanded additional funding to the United Nation’s humanitarian efforts and urged countries outside the Middle East to offer sanctuary and homes to the “most vulnerable refugees” who have been raped and tortured.

“The international community as a whole has to find a path to a peace settlement. It is not enough to defend our values at home, in our newspapers and in our institutions. We also have to defend them in the refugee camps of the Middle East, and the ruined ghost towns of Syria,” she concluded.

Gain a better understanding of the background of the on-going war in Syria with these fast facts provided by CNN. BBC tells the story of the Syrian conflict in just eight short chapters.

Here are a few ways you can help and make a difference.

7 Ways You Can Make Every Day Earth Day

April 22, 2015 by Young K.

April 22 is Earth Day, the annual celebration of nature and commitment to its protection and preservation. According to Time, Earth Day 2015 includes a cleanup of the Great Wall of China, beach-litter removal in Lebanon, and an attempt to protect 25,000 acres of rain forest in Indonesia.

Recycling, reusing, and cleanup projects aren’t just for hippies and environmentalists, however. Everyone can and should get behind the message of Earth Day — even small changes can make a difference at a time when our planet is in danger. Today is a celebration of honoring nature but also recognizing the role we play in keeping our planet clean on a daily basis.

In the past 50 years, we've consumed more natural resources than in all previous history combined (Eco Cycle) and because of the burning of fossil fuels, there is now more carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere than at any other time in the last 800,000 years (dosomething.org). Increased carbon has been the driving force behind global warming, which affects nearly every ecosystem, large and small. Furthermore, we have exploited and continue to rapidly destroy our planet with our continued industrialization and deforestation.

Here are a few ways you can make a difference today and every day of the year, courtesy of MTV.

  1. Seek out brands that are Rainforest Alliance Certified to make sure your dollars are supporting companies that don’t hurt rainforests.
  2. Fundraise for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), or use the WWF’s easy online forms to sign petitions and contact officials about protecting tiger habitats, stopping wildlife crime, protecting the Great Barrier reefs, saving elephants, and more.
  3. Support companies that use renewable energy sources, sign Greenpeace’s petition to stop oil drilling in the Arctic, and ask Shell not to get in the way of the UN climate talks in Paris this year.
  4. Using reusable shopping bags, water bottles, sandwich bags, and mugs instead of disposables can make a huge difference. You can also volunteer for a local beach cleanup and follow Rise the Above Plastics campaign on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed.
  5. Use the power of your wallet and your voice on social media to support these ten companies that run on 100% renewable energy. You can also follow @RenewablesNews on Twitter to stay informed.
  6. Buying local produce that’s in season, buying organic, and cutting back on meat can all make a big difference.
  7. Review bills pending in the US Congress that are related to the environment and contact your representatives to voice your support for laws that will help protect it.

Remember, this is our planet and thus our responsibility to ourselves and to all creatures big and small to take care of it.

Parody Video Turns Boring Office Job Into An Exciting GoPro Commercial

April 21, 2015 by Young K.

YouTube user Braziliandanny’s GoPro video of his typical, scarily relatable day at the office encompasses everything we’ve come to expect from a GoPro video — big music, unique angles, and quick cuts. Everyone should make more of these videos of their daily lives and jobs so we know we’re not the only ones who feel terrible that we’re not jumping out of helicopters, biking down mountains for Red Bull, or paragliding with falcons for a living.

Public Support Saves Bear Family Sentenced To Death

April 21, 2015 by Young K.

And while perhaps I should be ecstatic a family of black bears in Alaska were spared from being “euthanized,” I’m more annoyed and distraught the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was planning to murder a mother bear and her four cubs for acting as bears do and not the way they wanted them to.

In a nutshell, the media and public found out about a family of bears that were living harmoniously with the residents of Government Hill, a neighborhood in the north of Anchorage, Alaska, who then, naturally, decided to swarm the area hoping to exploit this occurrence and take videos and pictures. When the mother bear and her cubs were surrounded and backed into a tree, the mother bear became defensive and began “huffing” at the crowd, a characteristic sound bears make when they feel threatened.

Cue the overzealous biologist with the Department of Fish and Game who witnessed the scene as the department made an announcement the following day that the entire bear family would be killed in the interest of public safety.

Right. That makes as much sense as capturing a wild killer whale, forcing it to swim in circles in a tiny space equivalent to you swimming laps all day in your bathtub, making it to do tricks for small pieces of fish, then killing it when its natural instincts take over and it attacks. How dare it not do exactly what it is we humans wanted it to do?! Now it must die. Oh, wait, that already happens.

Luckily, after overwhelming support from the public and Alaska governor Bill Walker, the department announced they would instead relocate the bears. Victory! Yay! to The Dodo, for humans with souls, and for my new hero Governor Walker for making this possible!

This 'The Little Prince' Trailer Will Make You Cry

April 20, 2015 by Young K. in Movies

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic novella Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) is one of the most famous works of French literature of all time, having been sold in 145 million copies and translated in 265 languages. The Little Prince is a partially autobiographical fable about a pilot whose plane crashes in a desert, where he meets a small prince who has come to Earth as part of an adventure around the universe. Brought to life on page by the author’s watercolor illustrations, The Little Prince has been adapted countless times into a variety of different media.

The upcoming animated feature film from Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne features an all-star voice cast including Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, James Franco, Marion Cotillard, and Benicio Del Toro, and will world premiere at Cannes in the official selection. The film frames the classic tale with a modern day narrative in which the Aviator, now an old man, bonds with a little girl and introduces her to a magical world where anything is possible — a world that the Aviator himself was initiated into long ago by the Little Prince.

The Little Prince will be released in France on July 29. The U.S. release date will soon be confirmed.

Nike's Inspiring New 'Better For It' Campaign

April 16, 2015 by Young K.

Finally! A Nike women’s ad we can all relate to and get behind.

Nike's newest commercial captures the inner dialogue of women working out in situations we've all found ourselves in at one point or another — behind a row of models during spin class, running in any race, and really, any yoga class.

The campaign called #betterforit, which Nike says is its largest initiative yet in supporting and motivating women's athletic journeys, is asking women around the world to 'be active, take on new challenges and conquer personal goals.' It's inspiring women to push themselves further in fitness because — you guessed it — you'll feel #betterforit.

More than just a hashtag says Nike, #betterforit is a 'call to action' by way of a global community of female athletes, who will share, promote, and embrace fitness and sport together. 'If you're brave enough to try, you're strong enough to finish,' goes the strapline.

After all, Nike is the goddess of Victory.

'Angelina Jolie Pitt: Diary of a Surgery'

March 24, 2015 by Young K.

Angelina Jolie revealed she underwent a preventative surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes in order to avoid the risk of ovarian cancer, the disease which she lost her mother to. After blood tests revealed possible indicators of early cancer, Jolie – whose mother, aunt, and grandmother died of cancer – stated: "Last week, I had the procedure: a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. There was a small benign tumor on one ovary, but no signs of cancer in any of the tissues."

The opinion piece in the New York Times printed on Tuesday came nearly two years after the actress and human-rights activist had a double mastectomy having discovered she carried a mutation in the BRCA1 gene which gave her an estimated 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. Her announcement of that decision in a New York Times op-ed in May, 2013, was widely lauded by celebrities, cancer survivors, and medical professionals for its openness.

In Tuesday’s op-ed piece titled 'Angelina Jolie Pitt: Diary of a Surgery', Jolie wrote: "It is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe. It puts a woman into forced menopause.

"It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer. I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, 'Mom died of ovarian cancer.'"

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 20,000 women get ovarian cancer and about 14,500 die from it every year in the United States.

Knowledge is power.

12 Reasons to Watch 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies'

March 15, 2015 by Young K. in Movies

I found Peter Jackson’s third and final film in his trilogy adaptation of 'The Hobbit' to be disappointingly lackluster, disappointingly anticlimactic, and, well, just downright disappointing. However, as a lover of everything elven, Peter Jackson, Middle Earth, Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit, I still encourage everyone to watch The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Mostly for the following 12 reasons:

1. Because Thranduil, the Elvenking.
