Angelina Jolie At Kids' Choice Awards: 'Different Is Good'

March 31, 2015 by Young K.

In her first public appearance since publishing a powerful op-ed in The New York Times last week about her decision to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in a preventive measure against ovarian cancer, Angelina Jolie took the stage Saturday night where she accepted the award for 'Favorite Movie Villain' for her role in Maleficent. Speaking to the young audience, Jolie gave an inspiring acceptance speech about the importance of embracing your uniqueness.

“I want to say that when I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different. And I felt out of place, and too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in. And then one day I realized something, something I hope you all realize. Different is good.” The actress continued, “So, don’t fit in. Don’t sit still. Don’t ever try to be less than what you are. And when someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud.”

Jolie, who brought daughters Zahara and Shiloh to the ceremony, also had an important reminder for the audience: "Cause a little trouble. It’s good for you.”
